Eminent discomfort

Mission: The Departure
Location: USS Eminence
Timeline: Current

::ON::

Nerex was in his quarters on the USS Eminence, having second thoughts. Due to events outside of his control (and one decision within his control) he was to be assigned to a Starfleet vessel. He didn't know if there would be many other Romulans serving in Starfleet, but he didn't think there would be enough to make him more comfortable with being here. But he was here in support of his people, as a favor to his father, and in memory of both his mother and his wife.

He had been brought to the Eminence by a small squadron of four Romulan Warbirds. He would have liked to see the faces of the Starfleet crew when they decloaked. He wondered if they had been tense, worried about a deception. They wouldn't have been wrong to worry, Nerex's people didn't have a history of being trustworthy or friendly. There was no ruse or deception, though, at least not that Nerex had been aware of. He wouldn't be surprised if something came of it later. If it did, he hoped it wouldn't set back his own plans.

When he had beamed over, the human at the transporter pad had been friendly enough. Although he had returned the kindness of the crewman, Nerex had made a point to limit contact with others during his arrival. He was certain many had never met a Romulan in person before, and he didn't want to deal with stares in addition to his anxieties.

He unpacked his clothes and few possessions, including a picture of himself with his wife, mother, and father. He placed the picture on the small nightstand next to his bed. For the most part his room was undecorated, which was fine with him.

He had been a pilot for years in the Romulan military. Starfleet had allowed him to have the equivalent of his rank there, instead of starting at the bottom of their ranks. Nerex was grateful, figuring it would be easier for others to get used to than the alternative. He had used holographic programs to get used to the difference between Romulan and Starfleet helms. He was certain they were accurate, Romulan intelligence had always been reliable.

He needed to keep calm for now, everything would feel better once he could get to the helm. In the meantime, he sat down to meditate.
